The
Dunvegan Cup Replica

An accurate museum-quality replica of one of Scotland's most famous medieval ceremonial drinking vessels.

Project Overview

The Dunvegan Cup is one of Scotland's most celebrated medieval treasures and has been preserved for centuries at Dunvegan Castle, the ancestral home of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod. Although traditionally linked to the 10th century through local legend, modern scholarship dates the cup to 1493, when it was commissioned by Caitríona, wife of John Maguire, Lord of Fermanagh in Ireland. The elaborately decorated wooden vessel, adorned with intricate silver mounts, remains one of the finest surviving examples of late medieval Irish craftsmanship.

Our client required an accurate display replica that captured both the distinctive shape and the remarkable decorative detail of the original while remaining suitable for exhibition and educational use.

The Challenge

Replicating the Dunvegan Cup presented several unique challenges.

The original combines carved timber with delicate silver filigree, engraved inscriptions, decorative bosses, coral settings and four highly distinctive human-shaped legs. Many surviving photographs show only certain angles, requiring extensive historical research to accurately interpret the unseen details.

Every decorative feature had to be recreated digitally while maintaining the proportions and character of the original artefact.

Research & Reference Material

Before beginning the digital sculpting process, we gathered as much reference material as possible from museum collections, published research and high-resolution photography.

This research allowed us to study:

  • Overall proportions

  • Decorative silver mountings

  • Engraved Latin inscription

  • Human-shaped legs

  • Coral and gemstone settings

  • Surface wear and ageing

  • Construction methods

The objective was not simply to reproduce the appearance of the cup, but to understand how it was originally constructed.

CAD Design & Digital Sculpting

The entire cup was recreated digitally using CAD and digital sculpting software.

Individual decorative elements were modelled separately before being assembled into the complete vessel.

Special attention was given to:

  • Filigree silver detailing

  • Decorative borders

  • Raised bosses

  • Carved feet

  • Wooden grain

  • Engraved lettering

  • Historical proportions

This stage ensured the finished replica remained faithful to the original artefact.

Master Production

Following approval of the CAD model, the master was produced using high-resolution resin 3D printing.

The printed master captured even the smallest decorative details, providing the foundation for mould making and production casting.

Casting & Finishing

Once the master had been completed, silicone moulds were manufactured to allow accurate reproduction.

Each cast was carefully cleaned, assembled and hand-finished before receiving metallic coatings and ageing techniques to recreate the appearance of centuries-old silverwork.

Subtle weathering and patination enhanced the realism while preserving the intricate decorative details.

The Finished Replica

The completed Dunvegan Cup replica successfully reproduced the distinctive form and rich decoration of the original medieval vessel.

Suitable for museums, exhibitions, collectors and educational institutions, the replica demonstrates how modern digital manufacturing techniques can faithfully preserve important historical artefacts for future generations
