A bespoke prop cigar created by Unity Gifts, featuring realistic colouring, textured detailing, a decorative cigar band and a convincing ash-effect finish. Project Overview
This project involved the creation of a bespoke cigar prop, demonstrating the attention to detail and practical craftsmanship involved in producing realistic props for film, television, theatre and display.
The aim was to create a convincing replica of a traditional cigar, paying particular attention to its shape, surface texture, colouration and distinctive details. From the textured wrapper to the branded cigar band and ash-effect end, each feature contributes to the overall appearance of the finished piece.
The project showcases our approach to bespoke prop making, combining hands-on workshop skills with detailed surface finishing to produce a realistic, characterful prop.
The Making Process
Creating a convincing cigar prop required careful attention to the small details that distinguish a realistic replica from a simple imitation. The overall shape, proportions and surface finish were important in achieving the desired appearance.
Particular attention was given to the colour and texture of the cigar wrapper, creating the appearance of natural creases and the subtle variations found on a real cigar. The cigar band was also incorporated as a key visual feature, helping to complete the overall design.
The finishing process brought these individual details together, with carefully applied colours, textures and contrasting finishes used to give the prop a convincing, realistic appearance.
How the Cigar Was Constructed
The cigar was created as a bespoke prop, with its main body shaped to replicate the familiar proportions of a traditional cigar. The outer surface was finished to reproduce the warm brown tones and irregular texture associated with a natural tobacco wrapper.
Additional surface detailing was introduced to create the appearance of rolled tobacco leaves, including subtle seams and variations across the body. A contrasting cigar band was added around the centre, featuring a decorative embossed-style design.
The opposite end was finished with a textured ash effect, providing a strong visual contrast against the brown wrapper and helping to sell the illusion of a used cigar.
The construction and finishing were approached as a complete piece, ensuring that the individual details worked together to create a cohesive and believable prop.
