Replica Pilate Stone

A life-size replica of the historic Pilate Stone, recreated by Unity Gifts using 3D printing, resin manufacturing and detailed hand finishing. The replica reproduces the surviving Latin inscription and weathered limestone appearance of this important Roman archaeological artefact.

This project involved producing a 1:1 scale replica of the historic Pilate Stone, a Roman inscription discovered at Caesarea Maritima in 1961. The surviving inscription is historically significant because it names Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea.

The aim was to recreate the original stone's proportions, inscription and weathered limestone appearance, producing a detailed reproduction of an important archaeological artefact.

The project demonstrates how Unity Gifts combines modern 3D manufacturing with practical finishing skills to reproduce historically significant objects.

Reproducing the Pilate Stone required careful attention to the surviving inscription, the proportions of the original object and the worn appearance of the limestone surface.

3D design and resin printing were used to recreate the form and surface details of the stone. The printed replica was then finished by hand, with attention given to the inscription, surface texture and variations in colour associated with aged stone.

The finishing work helped bring the different details together, creating a convincing reproduction that retains the character of the original archaeological object.

The replica was manufactured using resin 3D printing to reproduce the overall shape and detailed inscription of the original stone.

Careful surface finishing was used to recreate the appearance of weathered limestone, including the aged colouring and worn surface character. The aim was to capture the visual details of the original artefact while producing a practical replica for display and interpretation.

The finished Pilate Stone replica recreates the original's proportions, surviving Latin inscription and weathered limestone appearance at full scale.

The project showcases Unity Gifts' ability to produce detailed archaeological replicas using digital manufacturing and specialist hand finishing. Replicas of this kind can support museum displays, educational interpretation, heritage exhibitions and other settings where an accurate visual reproduction of a historical object is required.

At Unity Gifts, we manufacture bespoke replicas, props and display pieces using traditional workshop skills alongside modern manufacturing methods.

Our capabilities include CAD design, 3D printing, resin manufacturing and detailed hand finishing. We work on projects ranging from individual historical replicas to bespoke commissions for museums, heritage organisations and creative industries.

Each project is approached according to its requirements, with careful attention to detail from initial design through to the finished piece.
