The 'Handfiller'. In early mining the only technique for winning coal was by men employed to dig it out by hand with a pick and shovel. This continued for many years until mechanisation of the coal face with cutting machines and conveyor belts took over thus increasing productivity. At approximately 7 high 5 wide this piece reflects how hard the work was showing a miner cutting coal, for a small wage, earned by the distance he cut.
